Masters Course
There has been a change to the dates for the GSSHD Digital Heritage course linked to the conference - it will now commence in summer session 2006.The Australian National University will be offering a master’s level course in conjunction with the Technology Conference. The course will begin online in January 2006, participants will attend the Technology Conference in Hyderabad, and meet in an intensive teaching mode for one day before and after the conference, and present their projects in parallel sessions at the conference. This course will address the increasing threats to the protection of cultural property in digital (electronic) formats and prepare the students with the understanding and skills for the effective use, management, and finally, long-term preservation of scholarly and cultural data and associated software.
The course will deal with the full range of Management, Technical and Practical perspectives and will cover a range of topics including:
- Understanding digital heritage;
- Understanding digital preservation;
- Understanding digital preservation programs;
- Accepting responsibility for digital preservation;
- Managing digital preservation programs;
- Promotion of the cultures of cooperation;
- Deciding what to keep for the future use or reference;
- Working with producers;
- Transfer of objects;
- Metadata issues;
- Managing rights;
- Protecting data; and
- Maintaining accessibility.
Throughout the course the whole range of standards (such as UNESCO's 2003 "Guidelines for the Preservation of Digital Heritage") and technical solutions (including those of The Internet Archive www.archive.org) will be explored in depth.
The course will be run on-line with a range of interactive multi-mode coursework modules and tools with a series of study and tailored learning plans.
