Strategic Philanthropy by IT Companies: Comparison of Two Indian IT Services Firms
We review guidance provided by Porter and Kramer (2002) on how to plan and monitor a program of corporate philanthropy that is aligned with corporate strategy (i.e., strategic philanthropy), then we present examples drawn from two Indian companies whose business strategies center on effective use of IT. In this exploratory field study, we compare and contrast the approaches taken by these two companies to align business strategy, IT expertise, and corporate philanthropy, and offer tentative lessons learned and suggestions for further research. We conclude: As companies in the IT services industry continue to grow, they will need to consider what contributions they wish to make to their local communities, to other neighborhoods around the globe where their operations or customers are located, and to the virtual communities in which they participate. IT companies, by dint of their employees’ high-level expertise, are well positioned to make valuable contributions and to have a high social impact. With disciplined planning, we believe they can simultaneously make a valuable contribution to society while improving their employees’ capabilities and strengthening their competitive positions.
